The Stuff Life is Made of...
"The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied." Proverbs 13:4

Recently, I was randomly reading the writings of Benjamin Franklin. In addition to being one of the founding fathers of the USA (not the President - I made that mistake lol), he was also a prolific writer and published his own almanac, which he described as a life-instruction guide that he created for those who could not afford books. In his Way to Wealth essays, he illustrated a situation where a young man was complaining about the raising and heavy burden of taxes and the following is how an elder replied:
“But [our] idleness taxes many of us much more, if we reckon all that is spent in absolute sloth, or doing of nothing, with that which is spent in idle employments or amusements, that amount to nothing. Sloth, by bringing on diseases, absolutely shortens life. Sloth, like rust, consumes faster than labor wears, while the used key is always bright, as Poor Richard says. But dost, thou love life, then do not squander time, for that's the stuff life is made of.”
According to the Institute of American Values, for Franklin the idea of wealth wasn’t riches but freedom: When Franklin said “wealth,” he did not mean living in splendor or luxury. He meant freedom. Freedom from debt. Freedom from worry about money. Freedom to be generous to others. Freedom to make and enjoy what he liked to call a “modest fortune.”
How are you spending your days? Are you working towards freedom or are you consuming your way into a life of debt/bondage/owing others. Although the film/TV industry is still shut down, may we continue to still find ways to not tax ourselves by finding ways to be advantageous and making sure our time is well spent - for this kind of wealth is what a “worthy life” is made of.
